Reflexology is a natural healing therapy practiced thousands of years ago by the Chinese and Egyptian people, based on the principle that every organ, system and part of the body has a corresponding reflex area or zone in the feet.
Reflexology is a complementary therapy and involves applying massage techniques using the thumbs and fingers to reflex areas found on the feet and hands.
Reflexology is extremely effective and is based on the principle that reflexes in the feet and hands correspond to each organ and structure in the body, and are linked to those organs by energy channels, zones or meridians. By having the whole body represented in the feet, the method offers a means of treating the whole body and of treating the body as a whole.
Reflexology stems from the ancient Chinese arts of acupressure and massage. These ancient skills were later researched and developed in 1913 by an American ear, nose and throat specialist, Dr William Fitzgerald, who used zone therapy, as named by him on his patients with amazing results. He discovered that pressure and massage, when applied to certain zones or points on the body, could have an anaesthetising effect on another unrelated area. By placing pegs on certain areas of his patients fingers, Dr Fitzgerald found that pain could be relieved in the eyes, ears, noses, sinuses or jaw. He later went on to develop a theory that divided the body into ten vertical zones ending in the fingers and toes, and concluded that pressure on one part of a zone could affect anything else within that zone.
Interest in zone therapy continued to grow and in 1938 Physiotherapist Eunice Ingham documented her work in reflexology for the first time in a book titled 'Stories the feet have told'. Eunice extended the work of Dr Fitzgerald and painstakingly mapped the feet with all the corresponding organs and glands of the body. Throughout her forty years of experience treating many thousands of people, Eunice devised a system of techniques which enable the practitioner to contact the reflexes in the most effective way. One of her pupils, Doreen Bayly, introduced reflexology to the UK in the 1960s, and its popularity has soared since.
Reflexology does not claim to be a 'cure-all' but numerous different disorders have been successfully treated by this method. These disorders include such things as:
Stress § Insomnia § Menstrual § Menopausal symptoms § Migraine Sinus problems § hormonal imbalances § Skeletal problems Constipation § Fertility § Pregnancy Digestive problems
What happens during treatment? How will I feel after treatment?
